    Archived links don't work

I was just wondering why the old links in the archives from say the photobucket.com site no longer work?

    Re: Archived links don't work

    Greg,

Yea, they don't on the new forum. But they work in the old archives.

    Try this one:

Hit Technical Discussion at the top of the page, then in the black screen go to the Archives as you used to do. Hope they don't do away with this feature, it's pretty handy.

Here's a picture test on the new forum:
    https://www.forums.ncrs.org/attachme...1&d=1204953765

Bet you can't name these desperados from the 2007 convention.

Especially the one on the left:

    https://www.forums.ncrs.org/attachme...1&d=1204953765

After 5 or six lobsters, and 2 or 3 sacks of clams, he was still standing and drove us back to Marlborough.

Thought I'd put these photos in the archives.

    Just having fun,

It depends on the source, if the picture is still available from photobucket the link should still work...

      greetings,
      Rob.

        Re: Archived links don't work

        Rob,

Maybe this is something to work on. I've tried doing a search in the archives under the new format, and the links to photos I know are still on my image site, just don't come up as hyperlinks.

The text for the links shows in the archived post but as plain text, not underlined like a link to a photo.

Also, I think the search engine in the new format needs some attention. If you do a search for a number of words, for instance, Essex lobster, you come up with only small portion of the posts that contain those words.

If you do the same search under the old black screen archives (as I indicated above) and search all terms, you will get every post containing both the words.

Not trying to be critical, but the old archive search engine under the black screen, seems to work far better than the new.

Hopefully, we will keep the old search capability on the forum until the new gets perfected or tuned up.

        Regards,

            Re: Archived links don't work

I have to agree with Jerry on this one Rob. All the pics that I posted on the old forum from my photobucket site are still on photobucket but I can't link to any of them from the archives in this new forum.

Oh and Jerry, I've never had the privilege of meeting him personaly but I believe the person you are refering to is Joe Lucia.

I did noticed the links and pictures in the archive forum which were still available also not worked and corrected this in the admin settings. It should be ok now!!!

                  Re: Archived links don't work

Thanks Rob, I knew you could do it. Tested it out and the photos in the bottom of the archived posts now work. The search feature seems to also work better, I think you also did something to it.

However, where there are multiple photo links in the text, the photo links still come up as text and not links. To view the photos, you have to copy and paste the link to the top of the Explorer page. This is also true of any other links in the text, like a link to another archived post.

Wonder if a program could be devised, that would recognize http:// and the sequence after it as a link, and show it as a link in the text. That way you could just click on it and it would take you to the photo.

This is the way the old forum worked, and how the new forum works on new posts with pasted links. Like this:

                  http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/518...inish1z-sm.jpg

Hate to be a PITA, but I know you can do this. I appreciate your involvement in this new format, the team has done a great job on it.

                    Re: Archived links don't work

Just a heads up. I've also created a script now to import all the pictures in the archives which were referenced by a link to another internet server. They will be inserted in the NCRS database as attachment so when the link gets broken the picture is preserved... I'm planning to run this script in the next couple of days (it needs to run for a couple of hours).

Some more things on my list:
                    * also do this for in line URL's like mentioned above by Gerard
                    * also build this functionality for non-archive forums (but these can have multiple pictures so this needs a bit of additional testing)...

                    greetings,
                    Rob.

Ok, after extensive testing I'm happy to announce tonight the script mentioned above is going to be runned. Also a newly developed script for changing the URL's into clickable URL's for the archives is going to be executed this evening...

Ok, all the images in the archives which were still on the net and were referenced by the image field on the old board are now imported. Also all the URL's which were in the text of the posts are now clickable. Quite a task, but we were able to pull it off...

Next: inline references to images should also be translated to attachments so these pictures, which are still out there, are captured before they disappear from the net...

                        greetings,
                        Rob.
