    Problem Posting Photos

I have been trying to post some photos in connection with my request for information regarding 70-74 big block exhaust. I was able to post 1 "thumbnail". Several subsequent attempts to post additional photos, including an attempt in the "test" forum, were unsuccessful. I was able to "successfully" upload the photos but they did not appear in the thread when I "previewed" it.

Most of the photos I post I do so for the exclusive benefit of others, not myself. The first time I try to post photos in connection with my own need for information, I'm unsuccessful. I can't begin to describe how this frustrates me, to say the least.

The best advice I've seen so far on this site for how to post photos came from Jack Humphrey. I followed Jac's instructions to the letter and it worked perfectly for me. Jack says, in part, to define your X-Y dimensions in inches or pixels and then change the resolution density so as to get it down to around 72dpi. If your photo editing software allows you to compress the photo, use high compression and make sure the file size does not exceed 95KB. Hope this helps and if not , maybe Jack will chime in and give you a more detailed explanation.

      Re: Problem Posting Photos

      Hi Joe:

I had a lot of trouble posting photos, and determined that my uploads were being rejected because they were too large. The upload appeared to work, but in fact had been rejected. I eventually saw that a small error message was being displayed, but it was not obvious.

The maximum allowable file size for a jpg is pretty small, something like 97K. This is too bad, because 97K is an unusually small size, so every single photo that I post has to be resized first. I have wondered whether we could eventually get the minimum size increased so that "normal" photos could be uploaded as-is.

In any event, this may not have any relation to the problem you are experiencing, but I thought I would mention it just in case.

I have the same problem posting photos here. I tried to click on Insert---nothing. Then on the paper clip drop down---nothing. I signed up for Photobucket---nothing. I tried to copy and paste, click and drag---nothing. I tried and tried and figured if it was that difficult just email me and I can much more easily send you any size photos with no rejections, no hassles.

          Joe----

I expect that's exactly the problem. I can't figure out why 1 photo uploaded just fine and the next 3 didn't. Perhaps the digital size of the first one was just below the maximum and the next ones were just above.

I'm really not into doing any "manipulation" with anything regarding photos, including file size, cropping, or anything else. So, if they don't post as-is, I'm pretty much stuck. Frankly, I liked the way that photos posted to the old board; I never had this problem.

            Re: Problem Posting Photos

The other thing that irks me is that one has to go through the machinations of resizing photos to fit. Some photos appear quite large on posts (happy day), others the size of a lump of sugar (squint) and then one has to click on it to get another window to get a larger view. My idea of posting photos? Copy & paste or click & drag and let the thing resize itself. Am I making it too simplistic?

              Hi Scott (and others),

I've just enlarged the maximum upload size to 300k for compressed images and now it does do the automatic resizing (it was constantly hitting the maximum boundary of 100k and therefor couldn't do the automatic resizing). It should resize now automatically your images to 800x600 pixels.

You still might want to crop you hi-res images to show only the detail you want to highlight since a resize also reduces the size of a small detail in a bigger sized picture making it harder to study.

              greetings,
              Rob.

                Re: Problem Posting Photos

                Joe,

                Go to this site:
                http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx

Go down the right site and download Image Resizer and install. It is a real small program which allows you to right click on the .jpg file and instantly resize it to 640 X480 (small) or 800X600 (medium) as well as other sizes. It copies the file and adds small, medium etc to the file name. Works slick for me, I use it all the time

Then in your post go to Manage Attachments at the bottom. Upload the resized photo from your computer which gives you the thumbnail at the bottom.

If you want to put the picture in the text, copy the link from manage attachments, use the insert image and paste it there.

The only rub I have found is that you can only do 2 photos per post. For more than 2 you have to do multiple posts.

Also if they are pictures you have already posted, you have to go to your profile under attachments to get the photo to insert.

                Hope this helps,

                  Re: Problem Posting Photos

Thanks, Gerald and Rob. I'll have a go at it again soon. That is a five step process you described and probably is what most people here are doing. I'm a one step type person when it comes to stuff like this and I'm usually computer savvy. On the contrary I am slow and meticulous with my Corvette and Impala.
Rob Musquetier is trying to streamline things. I was able to post photos in the Test area but couldn't duplicate my successes on the TDB. I just love seeing those Corvette related photos.

Thanks very much. That sounds like it's the answer. Although it will be my first "foray" into any "manipulation" of images, it looks like it will be simple enough that even I should be able to do it. Who knows, maybe it will "rekindle" a long-dormant interest in photography I once had and I'll forget all about Corvettes?

Also, I did find another "method" at re-sizing that seems to work and was easily accomplished. I just reduced the image size and "fineness" on my camera and that seems to work. However, this means that I have to go back and forth when I take photos for different purposes. I'm bound to forget to do it and screw myself up. So, I like your method better. That way, I can leave my camera in the "high" settings.

I got "spoiled" by using Village Photos hosting site for pictures I "posted" to the old board; Village Photos automatically "optimizes" photo size.

EXCELLENT! Thanks very much. I'll change my camera back to the original settings and try it the very next time I post a photo and prior to any use of the Microsoft resizer Jerry advised about.
