I HATE PMs!!!

It's not that I don't like to hear from other members - it's that the PM system is a parallel email system that has limited flexibility and capability - like you can't include attachments, and I get an email that tells me I have a PM.

Why not just send an email in the first place?!

If you left-click the mouse over the poster's name "send email" is the third item down on the menu - just below send PM.

Anyone else care to chime in on this?

I'll second that Duke... I've NEVER understood the purpose of the Private Message feature.

Just electronic bells and whistles..that are useless in my thinking.

I've noticed that a lot of my e-mail that comes through this board goes to my "spam" mailbox. I only scan through that about every week, or so, and sometimes I don't get into it until it automatically deletes. So, some e-mails that come to me through this board I might not even get.

I believe the purpose of the PM is to provide an almost real-time message exchange during the period when corresponders are signed onto the forum. It's more useful for swapping personal messages or gossip best left off the public domain, and less suitable for lengthy technical exchanges requiring photos or scanned documents.

Some email programs also provide no everpresent online notification of received messages as in "You Have Mail", and may require going through a few motions to open the program...If I'm not expecting a message, I may not check my email once, maybe twice a day, leading to some delay if anyone was looking for a quick response. Some ISP servers also experience inherent delays that lead to email not being received until hours later or even the next day.

But, the best thing about the PM is I can respond to someone I haven't known long, without possibly revealing my email address for nefarious purposes. It's not as bad as it was on the old TDB where anyone could post. There is a somewhat higher level of trust, because virtually all the posters are members, but I've been made paranoid by international spam trash avalanches...I have gotten explicit porn solicitations from all the european countries I knew pre and post cold war, and some that I didn't. This forced me to finally make painful address changes, and I don't plan to repeat that if possible.

And, before anyone starts...Yes, I now have a hardware firewall, software firewalls, ISP spam filtering, and spam filtering on two different software programs on my PC...but, it's better if the dirty bushwhackers just have no idea concerning your email address.

If I understand it correctly, it's an option on this web site to allow direct email contact (preserve/hide your individual email address). So, there are two contact options:

(1) Send private email (NCRS stores and forwards the message buffering sender from receiver) which has the limited edit, insert, attach features.

and

(2) Send email where you're put into direct contact without NCRS doing the store & forward function.

It's not clear what the distinction is between a 'private' and standard email and on the check box menu the private email choice comes first. That's probably why it's used as much as it is...

Duke, there are options to permit e-mails and PM's in your User Profile. Uncheck what you don't want and they'll stop. Gary....

glad i read all the posts because i thought duke was having PMS problems.

At Duke's age, he would be post menopause...unless he was married a much younger woman.

They use hormone replacement therapy to aid the transition. Ah, it's really too bad medical science doesn't routinely offer hormone replacement therapy for men...a little extra testosterone dosing in our elderly years might let us down easier.

I am probably guilty of posting a few PM's myself, and I apologize if they have upset anyone. I felt that, out of respect, I should deal through the NCRS TDB with members that I don't know except through this medium, and not through their private E-Mails. I did not want to assume I would be an old "back slapping buddy" until I know someone well enough to establish a rapport based on some level of mutual respect. I'm # 28060, not a newbie, but certainly not an established NCRS icon/Corvette expert as is the case with some of my peers in the club.

That's what I do if there is an email listed. I use PM first as a matter of consideration.
