I have been trying o upload pics from a disc fot the TDB.
The computer will not allow me to do anything with the file.
Message: Read Only!
How do I make the disc readable? OR,
How do I download to make a disc readable?
I tried to e-mail the file to my work computer, hoping I could manipulate it there. The computer then popped a window up that required me to enter the 25 digit code for MS 2003, I have Office/Student 2007 which is supposed to operate everything prior and current.
MS is of no help, even if I could understand whatever language it is that they are speaking.
Color me frustrated.

Mike, right click on the "Start" button on the lower left hand side of the bottom Tool bar. Click on Explore. Put the disk in the CD-ROM drive. It will take half a minute for your PC to recognize the CD-ROM data content. Use the blue sliding scroll bar and go down to the "CD-RW Drive (D" drive or whatever drive letter your CD-ROM drive is. Double left mouse click on that drive letter. The file list from the CD-ROM will then be displayed. Depending on how your PC's configured and software you have loaded, it might display the file type such as jpg photo files or whatever type of photos they are. You should be able to highlight all over the files on that CD-ROM by placing the cursor on the top file, depress and hold the left mouse button and drag it over all of the files until they're highlighted. You can then place the mouse on the top file again and depress the left mouse button (all of the files should remain highlighted, if not highlight again) and then "drag" the file list to where you want to copy them to on your PC such as "My Pictures" in the "My Documents" directory. Give this a go and let me know how you make out. Regards, Gary....

Hi Gary, thank you for the help.
I was able to get the photos into "My Pictures".
There still seems to be a problem with the disc, it has text also.
When I try to do anything with the text, such as, edit, move, copy or send. I get the cannot access-read only message.
Can this be released on the disc, or, do I have to re-burn?
If I re-burn how do I make the disc readable?
I cannot find any access with left or right clicks.
MS Tech Service is oblivious.

Mike,

CD's are read only! You can't edit a file and save it to the CD without some special manipulation. You will need to drag the Text files to your hard drive just like you did the pictures. You may want to create a new folder in My Documents and drag them to that new folder.

In the My Computer program when you click on the My Documents link in the left column it should open up your My Documents contents in the right column. If you right click in the My Documents folder a menu will pop up. Hover over New and from the list that pops up select Folder. Give the folder a name that goes with the files you are going to drag to it.

Once the files are in that folder you should be able to open them with your text editor be it Word or Notepad or Wordpad.

If I send this disc to someone else, is this the same procedure they must follow to access this disc and be able to edit, drag, copy, move or paste into another document?

Mike,

Yes. You can not edit files on the CD. You can move the files to your hard drive, edit them, and then write them back to the CD.

One other caveat is that sometimes when you copy a file from a CD to your hard drive it will still not let you edit it. This is because it has brought the Read Only permission with it. In that case you can right click on the file and then select Properties. You can then un-check the Read Only property and then click on Apply.

This won't work on the CD because you can't write new properties back to the file anymore than you can edit it.
