    Picture resizing

The board software "used to" resize pictures when we attempted to upload them, and that was nice. I then was unable to upload for a while, but now have tried again. Unfortunately it no longer resizes.

Is this intentional? I just need to know for future posting.

    Thanks.

    Re: Picture resizing

    Patrick,

I recently changed two items regarding picture posting.

First is the total space anyone who posts pictures can use. This was increased by more than double since we already had people bumping against it after less than a year of operation.

Second was the size of pictures. Before different formats of pictures were re sized to different dimensions. I changed the dimensions for all formats to 800 W x 600 H.

If your pictures were that size already you wouldn't see any change then.

    Hope this answers your question.

      John,

I assume there is no way to make it resize all pics larger than 800x600 to that size?

        Patrick,

As far as I know it should be resizing any picture over 800 x 600 to those dimensions.

Do I need to do a test post to check it?

When the pix is automatically re-sized to 800x600 is THAT the file size that counts in my storage space or is it the original file that I uploaded?

            Jack,

Only the size that ends up on the server will count against anyone's quota.

Thanks, John! That says/confirms we don't receive any benefit from re-sizing pix prior to uploading (file storage 'penalty') other than intentional croping, color balance, Etc. I appreciate the detail disclosure!

                Jack,

The benefit to resizing would be to reduce load on the sever doing the job for you, and sometimes the server will time out if the file is very large and your connection has a lower upload than download speed.

If the server times out before receiving all of the file you would have to start all over.

                  Not happening, John.
It tells me that I need to make it 800x600 to upload.

                    Re: Picture resizing

                    Patrick,

The server will not process a resize a picture if it is too large, or if you are trying to do multiple pictures at a time.

                    From the documentation:

If an image is larger than your maximum allowed dimensions or filesize, an attempt to resize it will be tried. This may fail if the image is too large to be successfully processed or if the image type is not supported for resizing. When this option is enabled, you should limit the Attachment Input options above to one, otherwise the uploading of multiple large images by one user could strain your server.

How large of a file are you trying to upload? The newer cameras with 10 and 12 or more megapixels create huge pictures.

Bottom line is Yes you may have to resize it down to 1600 x 1200 or somewhere around there before the server will attempt to resize it.

                      John,

2816 x 2112 per the camera's specs (not at home to verify). It's a 6 MP camera. I assume (?) this is larger than it now wants. The interesting thing is that I was resizing them w/o a problem until the adjustments were made on your end.
