I think I'll always remember the General's presentation t-shirts at the Palm Springs Vintage races in Nov. '92 - "30th Aniversary".

I started my automotive hobby with, well; let's just say "less expensive cars". But I still have some of those cars and participate on those forums too. It seems that the younger or poorer they are, the worse the spelling and grammar. The teenagers and young adults just getting into the car hobby in recent years are just terrible. I usually give up trying to read their questions very quickly, as do most of the older participants. Therefore, they miss out on getting help from those who have the experience to solve their problem. At least I have yet to encounter a post on NCRS that I can't understand.

            Re: Spelling

This TDB is a lot better than most, which is one reason why it's the only one I deal with, now.

The younger the audience, the worst the communciation. I can't imagine that business communications could be as bad as what you see on the Web, but it's been a while since I was in business.

If the spelling, grammar, or composition are so bad that I can't make sense out of it, I just don't respond, even if I might have something useful to offer. Why should I or anyone else waste time on someone who cannot reasonably communicate?

Another problem is people who don't break their message into paragraphs. When faced with a full screen of single spaced text I don't even bother...

For those of you who have submitted articles for The Corvette Restorer, you know what a hawk Reba is.

Oh, and another benefit of the TDB is that you are talking to people who have real names rather than xyz123.

This topic is covered in the FAQ (frequently asked questions) section.

If you are using I.E. 7. In the Post Message Form you will see in the upper right hand corner. Click on that link and it will offer to install IESpell on your machine. If you are using FireFox you already have spell check. If you are using I.E. 6, upgrade!

I guess I need to update this because the same add on is still needed in I.E. 8.

Firefox on the other hand has spell check built right in.

My reason for the post is :

There are many bright people on the forums who may not have had the formal education that many of us have had. Poor spelling may prejudiced some people from taking them seriously. They have a wealth of hands on experience that we can benefit from. If technology can help them share their knowledge, we are all the better for it.

Like texting. Some of the younger guys on the other forums "text write" some of their words and its a real challenge to understand what they are trying to say.

It is getting bad, especially with the increased use of the Blackberry. My boss is a Blackberry addict. He'll sit in a meeting thumbing away at that thing under the table like nobody knows he's not paying attention. In Toastmasters, they say its a speaker's biggest challenge. Once upon a time, when giving a business presentation, all you had to do was keep your audience from falling to sleep. Now you have to compete with a range of electronic devices for your audience's attention. And unfortunately, there has developed a tolerance of "shortcuts" and outright mistakes originally attributed to the tiny keyboards. That tolerance seems to have migrated to other written communication as well. The new goal seems to be to communicate in as few keystrokes as possible.

                                Re: Spelling

An occasional typo or misspelling is really no big deal. What can be a real problem is this shorthand "texting" style of writing, which I hope I will never have to deal with on a serious level.

The real problem can be syntax and grammar to the point where you just can't make any sense out of what the individual is trying to communicate. That, and a general lack of information like the engine option or other background information that is relevant to the problem.

In every professional job I ever had including the military, "communication", both written and verbal, was always an item in your performance review, and I usually scored high in that area. Nowadays, it seems to be getting tougher to find anyone who can communicate in complete English sentences.

I don't use spellcheck, but I always proofread my posts to make sure they make sense. I don't think some people do that and end up posting near gibberish.
