    Spelling

    Hi,

I am not the best speller in the world and I notice that many of the posts have spelling errors, because of typos or not being able to spell. There is in most browsers a spell-check. Just go to tools in your browser and go to advanced, and you will see a box that can be checked for spelling.

When you spell a word wrong, it will appear with a red line under it. Right click with mouse and several words will appear. Pick the correct one and spelling is corrected.

It will not give you the correct usage ( to, two, too ) but at least even if you pick the wrong one it will be spelled correctly.

    Re: Spelling

    Jack,
I too have noticed the many spelling errors in everything these days including communications from professional companies, financial statements, etc.
I think one reason may be that everyone does rely on spellcheck and we are forgetting how to use our brains.
You see it especially, as you pointed out, with the incorrect usage of words such as to, too, or two .
We are getting more and more dependent on technology it seems,,,,,,,,

That is true in most cases. In some, like my self, it is poor eidetic ? image. I can not spell when I write, but can correct spelling errors when I see them. Also some people may be dyslectic.

        Re: Spelling

I spent most of my life as a tech writing engineer, doing documentation work on contracts, proposals, and a lot of manuals for GM Locomotives. But, to this day, my wife, who is an immigrant from Thailand, can still out spell me - and I was her American English tutor there. Go figure.

I have noticed my system for spell check does not work on the TDB, for some reason, only for my E-Mails. I'm still not all that computer literate. My early writing days were either by hand "chicken scratching" or IBM Selectric.

Back when I had a secretary, I made a deal with her. I would spell the technical words correctly and see would do the rest. That worked out pretty good.

As a retired teacher of English and composition, I am appalled at the errors found in print today. Like Kurt, I believe it is partly because people rely on spell check too much. I am an avid reader and have begun to find "except/accept" and "effect/affect" and other words misused in publications.

I also know that some school systems do not emphasize writing as they once did. Before I retired, the trend in high schools was to encourage students to get their ideas across, and as long as they could be understood not worry about grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Later I taught remedial composition at our local community college, where my classes consisted of students who could not pass the entrance exam for English 101.

I just give up reading posts when the spelling gets too bad. It's too hard to determine what the writer is trying to say!

I've noticed that as well; billboards, signs, advertisements, TV banners...we're beginning to look like a nation of illiterates.

The best laugh I have had out of a misspelling (Let's see...is that one "s" or two?...) was on a T-shirt I received as a Christmas present from my son who attended a rival university...It was proclaiming how attendees of my school were dumb cretins. The only problem was an obvious misspelled word proudly protruding from their assertions...Whose your cretin now, Bud?

As I age, I find I'm making more mistakes on spelling and even grammar. I don't use spelling software...my wife is my spell checker, but I have to ask her to initiate the check. Strange why this is happening now. First time through the aging process for me; maybe I'm not using my brain enough, or it's slowly withering away.

Many of the people on this board come from groups renowned for thier poor spelling, like engineers and mechanics. Our SAT scores were high in math and low in english. I've written several technical articles, and published some, but I still can't spell. Even my sophisticated spell checkers with grammar miss some of the errors. There are also several members who do not have English as thier native language. I read all of thier posts, regardless of the quality of thier spelling. After all, I make spelling errors too, and this "ain't no spell'n bee".

Most folks on this board do not use spell checking including myself, probably many years ago when we were fresh out of school our spelling was much better. I use spell check for e-mails and now realize how bad my spelling has become, I think the old saying, " If you don't use it, you loose it", must be true. Steve
