I think it's got to do with the number of "views". When a thread gets to 100+ views the envelope goes from blue to red.

The color codes for the envelopes are at the bottom of the page. Just scroll all the way down and you will see them.

Maybe I should have said you have to be on the page where the envelopes are shown. If you are on that page and the explanation doesn't show at the bottom of the page -- I don't know what to tell you. They show up at the bottom of that page on my version, but it might have something to do with us having different settings. That kind of thing gets beyond my computer skills.
