    Trouble With New Forum

    My main HP PC gave up the ghost a few days ago, so I borrowed a slightly newer HP unit from my son and plugged in my hard drive in place of his. When I connect the unit to my old monitor the images are way to big and I have to constantly pull the image down or to the right in order to read the complete screen. Also, my TDC heading information is all messed up with many overlaid information. Can anyone direct me as to how I can reduce the image sizes for my monitor? My son says that his unit may have a different Operating System, and he finds it hard to believe that someone that knows cars and locomotives so well doesn't know computers (of course he has a PHD and I'm struggling along with a BE).

    Right click your screen (where there are no windows) and select properties, you should be able to set the screen resolution here (in some Windows version under a tab). Experiment and find the largest resolution size which still works with your monitor.

      Stu,

      Did Rob's suggestion work? If not it might be a little more involved.

      Thanks.

        Ken;

        Actually it did not work for me. What did was to go to my "Control Panel-Settings" and adjust the "Pixels"(?).

        My other problem, since installing the other computer with my hard drive and monitor is the scrolling - up and down, and left to right. It goes slow and in sections, like turning a page in a book. Given enough time I'll figure it out, but it would be helpful if some one could point me in the right direction.

        Thanks.

          Stu,

          What did you set the resolution to? Try 1280 x 768 with normal size 96 DPI.

          What browser are you using?

            Stu,

            Your video driver is probably set for your old computer along with several other drivers. Go to Start / All Programs / and find Windows Update. When you get to the update page select Custom. That should find the latest drivers for most everything that needs to update. Be sure to install all of the Driver Updates.

              Stu,

              John has the right of it. The hard disk that you moved from your old PC has a video driver installed on it for the video adapter on your old PC. If the video adapter on your son's newer PC is different, then the old video driver installed on your disk drive might not work properly with the newer adapter and you may need to install a new, correct video driver. John's solution should work. However, if Windows Update doesn't identify the video adapter, try this. If your son's PC was using the same operating system as your old PC, ask him if he has the driver disk (a disk that contains drivers for video, audio, network interface, USB, etc.). If he does, just insert the disk into your CD drive and follow the instructions for installing the video driver. If his PC was not using the same operating system, or if he doesn't have the driver disk, you'll need to go to HP's software support site to see if you can download the correct video driver from their site.

              Thanks.

                of course, you could run Unix variants and not have any problems!
