    Bill,
if you can operate your scanner, you can "digitize" your old "hard" photos and load them into your computer's photo program. All you should have to do is follow prompts on the scanner or else you would operate your scanner from your PC (or laptop) depending on how you are set up. Once your old photo has been converted to a digital photo, you can follow the directions that you will see in a couple of posts below yours on this board, and get your pics into your threads.

To help you understand the directions you read below that did not sink in, you write your post, and then go to the tiny picture frame icon in the tool bar above your post. You click that icon, which will open an add attachment box. There is a link in the lower right corner of the box that say basic uploader. You click on that. That will open a smaller box that says upload file. You click that, and it will open your computer's photo program. You find the picture file you just created and hit open. That will put the file address in the add attachment box. When you click attach, the photo will be in your post. You can repeat this as needed to add all the photos you want to your post.

      Bill,

      In addition to Don's instructions.

Configuring your scanner depends on what you want to do with your photos.

If you want to digitialize your photos and have good quality then select a 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch) setting. The file size is dependent on the photo size. a 4"x6" photo scanned at 300 DPI file size could be 2MB (megabytes) or maybe even larger.

There are many file formats you can use. I save to JPG file extension. Photo folks will tell you to save to GIF or TIF as they're the "print industry" standards. JPG file extension as well as TIF or GIF scans can be reprinted by WalMart/CVS/Walgreens photo departments.

On some scanners you can add a name to the photo and then save the photo. Others save it to a generic name and you have to change the file name to something meaningful. Try to use a name that means something, like the Event or Car and add a date the photo was taken.

File size should be small, around 150K (kilobytes) to upload photos or send them via email. To do this you can reduce the file size.

The Technical Discussion Board (TDB) file size limit is 300K. Photo pixels should be 800 pixels by 600 pixels or smaller. I usually get the photos down to 400 pixels by 300 pixels or there abouts.

Now the question is - how do you reduce the size so you can upload a photo to the TDB. The photos will need to be resized.

In the Photo How to FAQ, John Waggoner has created a video and recommends some photo resizers to use. The photo resizer software depends on what PC and Operating System such as XP, Windows 7 or MAC you have.

Once you select a photo resizer software to use. Then do some test scans and photo resizing. Trial and error. Just like experimenting with cams, carbs jet and timing.

Remember to save the photo as a different file name after resizing. Use the original file name and add an R to indicate Resize or whatever works for you.

      Good luck,

      Gary
