Though I have restored a number of Vettes and done all sorts of fairly complex repairs to various components, I have never had occassion to need to repair a transmission. As such, I am totally ignorant of the internal workings of a 4 speed. I have a loose T-10 I just purchased that was describes as being in "good shape". Other than removing the side plate and looking is there a way to tell if the transmission needs overhaul short of complete disassembly? When I turn the input shaft, everything seems to do what it's supposed to, but as previously stated, I am a real novice here. How difficult is it to overhaul a T-10?, Need any special tools, etc.?

Re: BW T-10 inspection/repair
Beside the obvious broken gears and noisy bearings, you have to check the smaller teeth on each gear next to the syncros. They should be pointed on the end facing the syncro ring, if they are chipped or rounded, then you will need to replace the gear, the slide and the syncros. It is not always possible to check the condition of the trans just by looking in. Other things that cannot be seen, thrust washers, needle bearings and condition of the slides.
Ed, if it would help you, I can email you some pics of the good, the bad and the ugly to help you determine your trans condition.- Top

Re: BW T-10 inspection/repair
Any reference material would be helpful. Sounds like some disassembly will be necessary. I have the old Clymer book which has a section on BW rebuild, but really haven't looked to see how detailed it is. I know the assembly drawing is small and hard to read.- Top
