    C-1 gas tank removed

I just removed the gas tank from my early model 1958. I have questions about the holes under the tank. In the body there are three two inch holes in the center and two four inch holes on the drivers side and two on the passenger side. Should these holes be there? And if so should they have some type of covering to cut down on the dirt.

I believe the holes are there to vent the gas tank area of any
fumes. Also if the tank was to leak the gas would drain.
