    C1 Ashtray Reproduction

Trying to decide whether to refurbish my original and crummy ashtray, or replace it. I assume all the affordable ones are repros.

    1. What is the quality of the repro ashtrays from the usual Corvette vendors?
    2. Is any one vendor's repros better than the others?

Chris, I replaced my old original with an NOS ashtray from Ebay at only a few bucks more than a repro. Just make sure you get the correct one as some years had cig holders and some didn't.

Can you believe some numbskull paid $143.50 for an ASHTRAY? I got mine from CC for $20, and it can't be told from the (rusty) original. Ah, marketing - what a science

E-bay is like any other swap meet, you need to know what to look for. Know the fiscal appearance of a part, is it early-mid or late. Right or left? part numbers end even for right side 2-4-6-8-0 and odd for left side 1-3-5-7-9. parts that can be used eather L or R don't matter. Many sellers don't know the differences them self.Buyers that don't know spend %25 of the cost in restoring just learning that!
Most people don't know that you can tell when a casted part was casted in which shift. At each casted part number you will see a screw head at the begining or after the number. At the number if you see only one round head, the part was casted on the first shift. Or one round with one flat the part was casted on the second shift.Or two round heads the part was casted on the third shift
During S.A.C production there was no second shift on the line at St.Louis, but suppliers had a second and third shift. There are some people that bow-gee a casted part number for geting this little tell tail item.

Roy, To expand on what you have said-----in some cases the cast screw head slot angle indicates a certain shift.

din't know about the angle! but later they used the clock affair. Two dots at top meaning 12 O'clock and arrow which shift.
