    Distributer radio interference shield?

I seem to vaguely recall that my new 73 had two sheet metal shields over the distributer points. This is inside the distributor not the outside ones. I seem to recall they they were a real pain so they were turfed.

If my memory is OK, anyone know the P/N's for an L48?

Yes, most 70-74 Corvette distributors (and other Chevy distributors) had the radio interference ignition shields INSIDE the distributor. They were also fitted to SERVICE reeplacement distributors for earlier models manufactured in the 70-74 period. These shields were only necessary when the original-style, seperate points and condensors were used. They are unnecessary when the "Uniset" style point/condensor set is used and GM instructed that the shields be removed in this case.

The shield set (2 pieces) was GM #1846216, but it was discontinued many years ago.

I would imagine they are near impossible to find these days

You never know; you might find a set lurking under the distributor cap of some 70-74 Chevrolet in a wrecking yard. Many will have been previously discarded, but I'll bet there are some still out there. Just flip the distributor cap window open and look until you find one.

Actually they're not tough to find. I see them frequently at swap meets, especially Corvette ones. They run $15-$25 per set.

Was there a specific size screw (especially length) used? Most of the ones I have don't have screws, and I'd hate to have ones too long.

The screws were a fillister, slotted head of size 8-32 X 5/16".

You don't happen to have an example or picture in your stash, do you?

Joe is right. My salvage yard buddy and I found a fair looking one on a mid-70's GM sedan. Pulled it out, wire brushed it and it looked pretty good. They are out there, you just have to look.

Late 70 and beyond only ??

I remember seeing one at a judging meet and determining (via NCRS specs) that I wasn't supposed to have one on my early '70 350/300 - because I don't. I just looked it up and the '70-72 TIM&JG links the existence of the RFI shield with the style of ignition sheilding. The early 1970 shielding with the full box around the distributor didn't have the RFI sheild inside the distrib, but the later style shielding such as that found in 1971 (and later) did have the RFI shield inside the distributor. Is this consistent with your information Joe? I hope so, that I don't have to track one down. ~Juliet
