hey lyle, sounds like the right thing to do. my 72 is ALL original with a few exceptions: belts,plug wires,fluids(of course),repro firestones(5),and thats about it. one of the other owners went as far as to rebild the calipers and put back the original pads. if you can believe that. i will clean up the suspension and put repro belts on it first,though. then i guess "it's a judging we will go". thanks for the input!

The lesson here is one we've all learned at some point and that is to proceed cautiously before replacing parts on what would appear to be an obviously original car. Of course, safety first but a 20k 72 car is a nice find and as recommended here, worth having a crew of knowledgeable judges look it over and offer insights into what you've got. Keep us posted.

No harsh cleaning on chassis simple green, paint or soft brushes and be looking for paint dabs and other marks. Lots of rags and light oil to keep parts from rusting after cleaning and NO! Spray Paint.

I HEARD THAT! on my 66 427 coupe i detailed the frame just like you said and uncovered the stencil numbers and dates and shim markings,too. i think that is half the fun and excitment in this hobby. discovering the past!!!!!
