What is the best way to reattach the sheet metal heat shield to the bottom of a cast iron intake manifold? I am considering tapping the holes and using machine screws, but there probably is a proven alternative.

Drilling and tapping the existing holes for sheet metal screws is the best way to do it. Install the screws with Lock-Tite. NEVER reuse the original serrated shaft studs, though. If you choose to use the original-type studs, then purchase new ones under GM #10229247.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: even with the rivits
Thanks for the heads up on that one, Clem. The new rivits actually have multiple external splines as compared to the ones removed with three indented areas, causing the rivit to swell / swedge. They appear more robust and, with the red locktite, I am sure there is no danger in them coming loose.- Top
