I have borrowed an HEI to do some troubleshooting on my 1979 L-82. It is #1103436 and the owner can't remember what it came from-but doesn't want to sell/trade it. The weights/centerplate allow me to get 36 degrees total advance by 2200 rpm with only 10 degrees intial so I'd like to find another one or at least a set of weights/centerplate to install in my original HEI. Any assistance would shorten my search at the boneyard and will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
You can buy different springs from aftermarket hot rod shop shops and mail order houses, which would be a better idea than trolling through junkyards. I don't think any OEM HEI systems from the emission era had curves that aggressive.
Springs are interchangeable with the single point/TI system, and the springs from the late 64 and 65 SHP/FI engines will provide full advance at about 2500 depending on the weights used.
if you buy a aftermarket weights make sure they are hardened, check them with a file because unhardened one will cause wear on the center post cam. most HEI advances can be can be speeded up by removing 1 of the springs as this will make the curve go full at almost twice as fast which would be close to 2000/2500 RPM
