    Installing Engine & Transmission together.

    I pulled my '62, 340hp eninge and transmission out together with no problems. I even installed my '66 300hp & tranny together as well (but it had cast iron intake). I've heard that with a aluminum intake, it's not advised to intall both together because of weight. It's much easier for me to install both at the same time. Are the exhaust manifolds too heavy too? I've used an intake plate and backed it up with chains bolted to block (as backup) in past. Thanks for any help.

    I've always used a "tilter" with four chains to Grade 8 bolts and hardened washers at the four corner intake bolt holes to remove and install the engine/trans as a unit. I've heard all the arguments about carb studs having more than adequate tensile strength to handle the load (and that's very true), but I never trusted the strength of the threads in an aluminum intake manifold. I know other people do it all the time, but I don't like it - never have.

      I agree with John. Use a "tipper" as he described. I wouldn't trust the carb bolts in a cast iron or aluminum manifold. Chuck

          I see pictures in car mags all the time where they use the carb studs. I wouldn't trust them in a cast iron manifold, let alone an aluminum one. If the intake is off, you could use those. I used the exhaust manifold bolt holes.

            I use the four studs with cast intakes and never had a problem. I have no way of knowing how much load four 5/16 carb. studs tightened would hold before breaking but I think maybe someone on this board can figure it out as we have lots of experts. As for alumnium intakes the condition of the threads would make me use other methods. When using a tilter the carb. location wouldn't be used anyway.

              If you use the intake bolts, you might also consider using a junker intake. Minimises scratches...

                I installed the 454 and TH400 in Orange Crush (1976 Suburban) as a unit using a carburetor plate. It has a cast iron intake manifold.
                On initial run-up the intake manifold seeped coolant at the heads. Retorque fixed it, but I learned and will NOT do that again.

                  I just installed my engine this year using and engine tilter.
                  The only way to go.

                    The load leveler is the only way to go...and you can get them anywhere for about $35. Well worth the investment even if it's just for one use...and I don't like any carb plate lifting personally, although with a CI maifold it would be fine. But, the lever wouldn't work with this method...Craig
