If you are talking about a tank sticker for your FI 63, the tank sticker application started in 1967.

Without a doubt a "real" Tank Sticker wins hands down. POP's are nice if they complement other factory/dealer paperwork but we cannot lose sight of the fact that POP's are reproduced. The reproduced POP's are affixed to NOS warranty books and they look pretty authentic and make a nice addition to a otherwise documented car. Any car documented by a POP "only" should not be considered fully documented in my opinion.

        Don't Understand....

If you're talking about a 'restored' car, the POP is a judged item while the tank sticker isn't. Therefore, having a POP (real original or 'correct' reproduction) is a scoring issue and thereby has greater significance.

If you're talking about acquiring a Corvette and relying upon either as 'proof of factory authenticity', neither works....

In the case of a tank sticker, who's to say a given tank sticker (or the gas tank for that matter) IS the original for that car? Tank sticker/build sheets didn't have VIN info on them, only job number and ordering dealer info. More than one Corvette was bought for track competition, stripped of factory original parts to meet SCAA regulations as well as improve HP/weight ratio with the resulting factory original components set aside or sold off to resurface some day....

The POP issue is similar. There are good reproductions available, so simply having one that matches a given Corvette is NOT proof positive of factory authenticity. One can even question if a given car was 'put together' to match a real McCoy factory original warranty book/POP....

          C2 tank sticker vs POP

Jeff, More research has been done on identifying real POP's, just as original trim tags can now be identified vs reproductions. With this knowledge a real POP is probably better solid evidence than a tank sticker with respect to confirming some of the original options on a car because real POP's can't be reproduced. Al Grenning is currently conducting research on POP's and will likely publish something in the future.

            Re: Don't Understand....

Jack, I respectfully disagree with a few of your comments.

I don't believe the question was asked with judging in mind but directed to physical authentication of a certain car. In any event most judges are not able to determine a reproduction POP from an original anyway.

If you don't use an item like a tank sticker for authentication then what do you use???? Most all the POP reproductions are done in the same place so the repros out there are all quite similiar and quite good.

My concern with all of this is the person out there who decides to purchase his/her childhood dream and buys a documented car for "all the money" and later it it is determined by an NCRS judging team or future buyer etc. that the documentation is reproduction. This is the very root of the Corvette hobby having a bad name. Those of us close to the hobby often refer to people who sell bogus cars and avoid them. Those not so close often don't know any better and a prone to making a bad purchase.

Re: C2 tank sticker vs POP

Mark, your comments are right on and it is encouraging that some of this reproduction documentation is finally being discovered. The problem still exists with past judged cars that have been previously certified and with current owners/buyers who do not have access to the research that Al and the NCRS are currently doing. It is however a giant first step. The POP plate reproductions are quite good and I have yet to see/hear Al's presentation on these.
