    Carburators

    I have a 1972 350/200 coupe, assembled in August 1971.
I am investigating the #matching. It is suppost to be a #matching car, but
i do not find out regarding the carburator.
The engine block is #matching, and also the TH400 autotrans.

The numbers on the Q-jet carburator manufactured by Carter is

    left(vertical)9037S
    right(vertical) 2629

I can not see that these numbers fits to numbers
descibed in MF Dobbins or other info books I have(Tom Falkoneer/Rochard Prince).

    Does anybody have the explanation

    Best regards

the number that should be stamped vertially on the driver side above the secondary throttle shaft for your corvette would be 7042202 for federal emissions or 7042902 for calif emissions with auto trans. 9037S is a carter number and over the years rebuilding Q jets i have seen these type of numbers stamped on Q jet carbs. i think that these carbs are either carter factory rebuilds or new over the counter auto parts Q jets sold by carter. this is just a guess on my part as i have never found anything to back me up.

The 2629 may be the date code. 262 day of 1979-1989-1999?

Some original, PRODUCTION QuadraJets used on Corvettes were manufactured by Carter. However, the one that you have is a SERVICE carburetor. It was manufactured in 1979 or, possibly, 1989. I don't think that Carter was manufacturing these carburetors as late as 1989, but they may have been.

Usually, Q-Jets, regardless of manufacturer, sourced through GM or Delco will carry a GM part number beginning with "7" or "17". So, I expect that this carb was otherwise sourced. But, it may very well be an exact duplicate of the original or a proper SERVICE unit for your application.

The Carter (Q jet) carbs that I have worked on all had the number on a round metal tag that was located on the right (Passenger) side of the carb. As I understood it , Rochester couldn't keep up with production needs so Carter built some to Rochester specs . These carbs were installed on the assembly line.

Yes, many Carter-manufactured QuadraJets were used in PRODUCTION; they were, by no means, a SERVICE-only carb.

              Re: Carburators

Carter Qjets are common original on 73's but the correct part number and date are stamped on them. They are date coded only by a letter and a number (A3) Jan. 1973 this dating hase caused some problems for judges looking for a julian date as the roschester carbs had.
