Hello everyone, Can anyone tell me if the water pump pulley is marked anywhere. I have an extra pulley in my possession and i am trying to determine its application. It has 2 grooves and there is a raised mounded area with 4 holes on the top of the mound and one in the center of the top of the mound. I see no places wehre there would be a number, however this thing has been painted a couple of times. is this one of those parts that may no have a number? any help would be appreciated. this part i was told came off of a mid year car.I bought the part before I really knew what i was doing. Can anyone give me any insight? TIA Tony

Unfortunately, some water pump pulleys are unmarked as to part number. If they are marked, it is usually readily apparent on the front or rear surface of the pulley. Unless the part is heavily painted, you should be able to see some evidence of the numbers through the paint. Your description of the part is not particularly helpful since most Corvette water pump pulleys are of the general configuration which you described. You could narrow it down, though. If the pulley water pump pilot hole(the center hole you describe) is 5/8" in diameter, you know that you have a pre-71 pulley.
There were only 2 water pump pulleys used on mid-year big blocks without A/C. 65-66 big blocks used pulley GM# 3864480. 1967 big blocks used pulley GM #3906656. Both pulleys are functionally interchangeable and are of two groove configuration as you described. Unfortunately, there are several small block pulleys of the period which are similar. The 3906656 pulley is still available from GM and lists for $117.00.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Pulley Numbers
Tony, a handy reference item to have is the '53-72 Corvette Parts Catalog that's available in the NCRS Merchandise Library from Cincy. When it comes to things like belts, pulleys, special fastners, the catalog has a NOTES column against the parts where special finish, configuration and/or markings are noted. This helped assist dealership parts counter staffers to getting the right peg in the right hole. I use it frequently when I'm at swap meets, in scarp yards, Etc. looking for that original 'whatever'.
But, as Joe says, without being more specific about your car's configuration, it's tough to give you the bottom line answer. AND, Joe's right on when he says not all the pulleys were marked with P/N detail....- Top

I was able to dig one of my NOS GM #3906656 pulleys out of my "private stock". This pulley has NO part number stamped on it. However, I can give you the important dimensions to check against the pulley you have. The pulley has, of course, two grooves, At its greatest diameter it measures exactly 7-3/16". The "hat" section is 3-5/16" in diameter. With the pulley setting on a table and the front, hat section resting on the surface of the table, the height of the pulley measured to the edge of the outermost groove is 2-3/4".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
