    C1 Spare Tire Plywood Cover

    Two questions concerning this item.

    1. The car was recently judged and pentalized for having a knot plug in the plywood. According to the NCRS Fourth Edition 1958-60 Corvette Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide on page 27 it states, "The apare tire cover is made of construction grade 3/8" plywood, normally not showing knot repair plugs....." Based upon this description in the guide I don't believe the car should have received a deduction. Do you have any experience with this item or do you have an opinion on the subject?

    2. I have purchased another restored board and in the same guide it states that the jacking instruction label is glued to the top right side. This is a different location for the label compared to the one currently in the car? The one in the car now is close to the rear bumper and on the right/passenger side of the car. I didn't receive any deduction or comments about the location of the current label. Which is it? Forward on the board/closer to the front bumper and passenger side or back on the board/closer to the rear bumper and passenger side.

    Thanks for your help!

Re: C1 Spare Tire Plywood Cover

    Perry,
Both my cars have a tire board that has the label on the passenger side closest to the bumper as yours did. That is the correct position as both my boards are original. Neither of my boards has any repair plugs in them, but am unsure if any did. The only thing that I almost took a deduct for was not having glue slopped beyond the label, but when I told the judges that the original label had glue that was short of the edges by at least 3/4" all the way around, they did not deduct for it. The only reason that the original label was not left in place was that the edges were broken away all the way around due to lack of glue to hold them down! This was one of those areas where a judge was ready to deduct for lack of sloppy glue application when it was obviously not that way originally on this car. The judge did listen to my case, and decided to not deduct for lack of glue.

    Regards, John McGraw

Perry I see you got three top flights before and I bet each judge had his or her pet item. I'v judged for to many years in the past and I look for original parts and body fit on C1's. I'v seen plywood with and with out knots. Most arguments I hear from owners in a class like C1's is that thier judg never even owned a C1 and so on. Like I tell owners that are not happy, (you play the game or get out )Most owners that have played the game for years know what I mean. That is why I think many many older C1 menbers have thier vetts parked in the parking lot, I enter the Sportmans class with my 55 just to keep my vett safe while at a meet, then no body can tell me what a pile of S%$#& I have.

Re: C1 Spare Tire Plywood Cover

I have had three cars with the original tire boards and they all had repair plugs in them. This is something that is easy to spot and a new judge can find a fault or so he thinks.

          Perry,
IMO you should not have received a deduction for the plug.
Regarding the label, the "framed border" around the two illustrations should each measure 4 1/16" high. There are a slew of repro label's out there that are about 85% of original size. If your's is one of these, judges didn't notice. Regards,
