For the first time, I found a written explanation for why the the "g" was added to the name of the founder: Leslie Irvin, who made the first parachute descent in 1918.
That explains some curious buckles that I have: They have a circular parachute logo with "Irvin" on the front, and "Irving Air Chute" stamped into the back.
