    '57 Defrost knob and cable

The defroster actuator on my '57 has seemed to stop working. It feels as if the cable is not attached any more because the knob pulls out very easily. Before I remove the unit, does anyone have any hints or suggestions on repair?......thanks

Check that the outer cable is held rigid at the back of the switch
and at the defroster box end.
If it has come loose from the tube at the back of switch you may
be able to push outer cable back in the end of the tube and crimp
the end of the tube over to hold the outer cable or engineer some
    sort of clamp.
The inner cable may have come loose from the knob shaft also.
In either case it's probably easier to pull the switch.
