    C2 -66 Instrument Cluster Removal

I realize this subject has been posted many times and I've looked through some archives. My question is if I were to change out my speedo would I have to unhook most of the gauges, ign, light switch & etc.? In other words I've read where I have to loosen the steering column and lower it, but can I pull out the cluster far enough to exchange the speedo without unhooking everything? Thanks in advance for any advice or tricks to make it easier.

The speedo and tach are a seperate piece mounted to the rear of the instrument cluster. They are fastened to rear with several screws. I don't believe it would be possible to remove this piece without removing the entire cluster. There just isn't enough room to get around the wires and cables.
I didn't remove the entire steering column to get the cluster out. I unbolted the column from the dash and dash support. The steering column then dropped a couple of inches. This was a enough room to get the cluster out. It was actually more difficult to get the cluster back in. Connecting the cables and wires with a limited amount of work space takes patience. You may want to have a wiring diagram available to be sure to get the correct bulb in the correct socket. I thought I could label them as I took them out. I couldn't, there wasn't enough room to do so.

I unbolt the seat and remove it prior to dropping the column. Allows much more room and only has 4 bolts which need to be removed.

        Rich,

I would also take your rag joint apart when dropping the column. I made this mistake and had to replace the lower bearings because I let the column down too far. This was a good excuse to rebuild and repaint the whole column. Another case of the ankle bone is connected to the knee bone. Good luck, Bruce
