67 Master Cylinder back from Apple Hydraulics

I just got my 67's Master cylinder back from Apple where I had it resleeved. They did a great job on the sleeving, it took two weeks to complete upon receipt, they indicate 1 week is normal but I suspect they were busy with the holidays. They charged $75 for the work, site says $60, but Lazar said dual circuit cylinders are more work due to more drilling and the deeper bore itself is more involved. They also hit me $15 for pulling the original piston, I had it packed up before I called and he told me I should strip it first, but he agreed not to charge since it was packed for shipment so I will call him back on that...also, I sent detailed instructions not to cast blast paint, but they did anyway...including inside the reservours....so I had to clean that up to prepare for the black VHT brake paint Joe recommended. I guess being explicit is tough for them to deal with...all in all, I am happy, just a few minor kinks to be aware of.

One thing that I am curious....the sleeve (as viewed from the bore end) is fairly thin, and the circlip groove looks to be cut almost as deep as the sleeve in the brass...isn't there a risk of the small "ring of brass" at the end tearing out due to it's softness? I would have preferred a little more margin here, it has to be paper thin in the groove area. I guess nobody has any trouble with this so I shouldn't worry.....Craig

I can't answer your question about the groove and effect on the end of the sleeve, but from the sound of your description, I don't like it.

What amazes me is that a vendor would paint the INSIDE of the m/c. Glycol fluid will dislodge almost any paint, which would then become debris in the system. the only thing that should go inside the reservoir is brake fluid!

Just got my '67 5455509 cylinder back from White Post (got it as a bare empty core to begin with); looks great, and Billy painted it black as I requested (instead of their usual gray), with the machined areas unpainted and NO paint in the reservoirs. They're pricier than some others, but they do nice work.

Thx Duke and John. I went with Apple as I had heard good things from lots of folks here about both Apple and White Post. White post did not want to just sleeve the cylinder, they wanted to rebuild in entireity. Maybe I should have gone that route. I was irritated that they got cast blast on the inside of the cylinder, especially after I sent a detailed letter explaining to leave it raw cast iron. The quality of the sleeve seems good, the honing looks good, I didn't mike the bore ID to see if is exactly 1.00" yet.

John - can you see how thick a wall your brass sleeve has from white post? I am wondering if I should have them redo it or ask for a refund. At least if there is a problem and a thicker sleeve should be installed it is underbored not overbored. Maybe I should ask for a refund and complain. I will take some pictures and send to you guys for your opinion. I wasn't trying to economize on this operation....just didn't think that the $195 for them to install the rebuild kit was worth it. I was not happy they charged $15 for a 1 minute operation to take out the piston after I was told it would be free either. Ugh...Craig

Well, the cylinder is dead nuts on 1.000" when I measured it with my dial caliper, and finish is excellent in the bore. It may just be that the sleeve appears as if the groove is cut close to the OD, since I am viewing he chamfer to allow the piston to slide in. They did do a nice job of the radius on the sleeve bore end to prevent tearing seals upon installation. I sent Duke and John pictures to get their thoughts...thx guys! It will probably work fine...I may just be my hypersensitive self....Craig

Re: 67 Master Cylinder- thx everyone!

Thanks to everyone for posting on the various master cylinder rebuild experience they have had...I came to the conclusion with help from John Hinkley that Apple really did do a great job on the brass sleeving....my anal engineer tendencies were just getting the better of me. As far as the cast blast, when I removed it from the exterior of the cylinder, I did determine there was some overspray on the inside based on using solvent soaked paper towels, although they had not sprayed there on purpose. This is the only fault I have of their work, other than the misunderstanding on the extra $15 to strip the cylinder upon receipt which I have to rectify when they reopen after New Years Day...thx!....Craig

John...I don't proofread and check my typos enough, but at least I should have checked your name! I forgot the c in Hinckley....thx again!...Craig
