I am looking for one with associated wire harness. If my research has served me well I will need the fan shroud with attachment points as well. Any tips as to sources?

Paul-----
Some of the components are still available from GM. The fan motor is available under GM #22134672. The fan, itself, MAY still be available under GM #22088724. I'm not sure that this is an original configuration fan, or not, but, if it's still available it should be functional. The original fan blade assembly was GM #22016679, but this was discontinued in June, 1998.
Dr. Rebuild carries most of the other parts, including the "trap door" fan shroud and wiring harness. He also carries the above parts, too. Other vendors may or may not have them, also.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1979 GM Auxiliary Cooling Fan Unit
I have looked into this further. That fan is designed to kick in at 238F, a temp my car has never seen. In fact, my 1979 rarely sees 220F in the hottest of weather. So what was the intended application for that fan?- Top

Re: 1979 GM Auxiliary Cooling Fan Unit
Paul,
The fan is designed to come on as you say at 228? aprox. If you us the airconditioner it will come on. It also will come on when the engine is turned off and heat builds in the head and switches on the fan. Ever notice the yellow decal? There should be a warning decal on the top of the shroud and the bottom of the shroud. As for the trap door it is counter weighted to open when the fan starts pulling air into the shroud, this increases the amount of airflow.
My 79 when new did all of this, I believe this was only on the L-82 optioned cars, which mine was.
