70 Door Panels

I am replacing the door panels on my 70 cpe and I noticed a difference in the interior of the 2 doors. The passenger door has a black plactic piece over the lock mechanism at the top rear of the door that seems to be a water diverter of some sort. The drivers door does not have this piece and I do not see it in the AIM.

Could this be a replacement door from an different model year? Or is this piece correct and missing from the drivers door? I have checked several parts catalogs and have not seen this piece. Anyone familiar with this poece?

I assume that you are talking about the piece inside the door over the lock mechanism. If so, yes it should be there, and it was on all of them, so the driver door should also have it. It serves a couple of purposes I guess. One could be water diversion, but the most important is that it makes it harder to slim jim the door.

Thanks Wayne. Now that you mention it it sure looks like it would make the use of a slim jim tough. I used to repo cars back in the 70's and fortunately never came across this device. Have you seen this piece in any of the catalogs?

The door lock shields, GM #3966773, lh, and GM #3966774, rh, were used from 1969-82. They were discontinued quite a few years ago, though. My information shows that the right side shield is available in reproduction but the left side shield (the one you need) may not be. I don't know of any vendors that carry them, though

My 70 has the shields. You might try Contempory Corvettes, they advertise that they have used parts for Corvettes.
