    Re: Polarizing Generator

Chuck, I stand behind you on this one. I too have tremendous respect for John Pirkle and Pirkle Jr. but I have never had to respark a generator after *years* of dormancy. Since last year when I first heard of this, I've asked several people who's automotive electrical knowledge I respect. Basically, they said that weird electrical things do happen and this could be one of them. Keeping this in perspective, let's not forget that during the "age of the generator" many engines saw occasional seasonal use such as farm machinery, saw mills and inboard boats. If this was a problem, why wasn't this a known back then?

Polarization process is described by the shop manual. Joe's correct, the solid state alternator technology does not apply -- only real DC generator Delcotron models. Also, others have read the book and supplied input on process of grounding field coil and momentarily 'sparking' the armature to magnetically align/bias core laminations.
