    C1 King Pins

I'm going to try to replace the king pins on the car - that is, without removing the knuckle from the A-arms. Is there any reason to remove the brake backing plates? Any reason to disconnect the tie rods? Can both of these items be left on the car?

Chris, I'm going to suggest that you remove the brakes and backing plates - tie rod arms will fall away with the removal of the backing plates. The reason is that the old pins may be difficult to remove without some hammering and pressing and the new pins will be hard to install with thoses other parts in the way. Just a suggestion, but I really feel that you'll have less frustration and easier working if you remove the brake parts. Good luck, Steve

If your car is like any of the ones I have replaced king pins on, you'll want to get this stuff out of the way so you can clean everything up. That will likely take more time and effort than the kingpins themselves. No reason to remove the spindle support. If you leave the brakes in tact, support the assy from a wire or something rather than hang by the brake hose.
