    C-1 59 CORVETTE HARDTOP

Hello all, I have a 59, it came with a 1960 hardtop .. I am having problems mounting it on the car ... The rear deck lid is lined up right, gap is even, about 1/8 inch space across the back + or -.... But really have to preload top to get it to mount ,3 bolts in rear..All most imposible, the deck lid needs to move aft but not enought space ...Is there any adjustment in the windsheild? ..Will it fit my car?

I am not aware of any dimensional difference in a 59/60 hardtop. There is no adjustment to the windshield. Has the body been off the frame? If so, could be a body shim issue.

      James,
Instead of thinking of moving the deck backward, better start thinking of moving the windshield forward! Here's the situation on a '56/'57 which you'll have to extrapolate to your Corvette because the hardtop side window area mounting pins may be of a different style. On the '56/'57 on the body between the door and deck is a short chrome trim piece with a hole for the hardtop window area mounting pin. From this hole to the pin receiver hole in the top of the windshield frame the dimension is 31 5/8". If you can equate the same point on the side mounting (pins?) of your Corvette the dimension should be identical. To achieve this dimension the rear of the side cast windshield frame is shimmed by adding more of those rubber shims. Adding shims in this area will tilt the windshield forward at the top. Regards,

Jim makes a good point. While the windshield has no fore/aft adjustment per se, if the shims at the rear are insufficient, or have been left out as is not too uncommon, it would tilt the top of the ws frame backwards a fraction.

Thank you guys ,I thought it must be in the wind sheild .. A good place to start ... And yes the body has been off the frame ... Not by me ,I got it that way ,its a very good job, every thing under car is new .. Had to change out rear gears as was a 456, went to 336, at least now I can drive on hyway..Car is too nice to drag race ... Now if I can get the top to fit ,I will be on the road... As always thank you very much all ... And if you think of anything else please post .... Best to all in this new year ! James............

James, check out the windshield issue as it is a good possibility and by far teheasiest thing to correct. If that isn't the problem, check the fit of the doors. If the gap is too narrow or too wide at the top, it may indicate the body isn't shimmed quite right on the frame. If it is too narrow it would indicate the car is slightly bowed upward at the ends which would effectively moove the ws closer to the rear of the car.

I have noticed my hardtop does not fit without preloading now, wheareas it it used to drop right into place. I think the rag top was too tight and pulled the winshield back a bit. After reading all the other posts, I fear I may have broken tabs on the windshield frame.

that is what the chevy bulletin to the dearler points out about too tight a folding top pulling the windshield back.

                  James --
If the amount of adjustment you need is small, you can shift the location of the three mounting nuts by filing the fiberglass holes slightly. This allowed my '57 hardtop to fit when otherwise it would not.

It is entirely possible. Those tabs are really pretty fragile, and top shops like to strech tops really tight. If this is the case, you may be able to see the side post move when you latch the top. No way to cure it except removing the ws and getting the tabs repaired.
