    re-lube for steetring box

Was going to repack the steering box on my 68 with synthetic grease, as recommended in Richard Newton's Resto Book.

He recommends removing the cover plate (the 3 bolts that hold it on, one being for checking and adding lube oil).

The lash adjusting screw and locknut are on that plate, so I was wondering if any special care or steps need to be taken with the lash adjusting screw when removing the plate.

Anyone out there with some advise on this?

    Thanks,

    Rich

I went by the corvette manual i had and it said to take the bolt on the left and the bolt on the right out ( if your looking straight down at it ) and put a grease gun extension in the left bolt hole and pump it till it squishes out of the right hole then thats it. I did this on my 72 and it steer alot easier. Of course i also had to use one hole big tube of grease because it was all dried out. I think it was never touched before i did it. Eric

I recommend you follow Eric's advice and use the procedure from the service manual. If you remove the steering gear cover, it will be virtually impossible to re-establish the same gear preload.

you can take a similar bolt, drill and tap it for a grease fitting and install it on the one side with the bolt on the opposite side out and grease till grease come out the empty bolt hole.

            Re: re-lube for steetring box

What is the correct type or weight of the lube that should be used in the steering box?

i would use a moly based chassis lube as this will reduce some of the friction.
