    "56 or '56 horns?

Member 35441 Corvette lovers everywhere.. Happy New Year..
Someone removed the horns from my '56 prior to my purchase and installed imposters. SO.. Can anyone tell me what the numbers should be?? Are they the same for all the 12 volt systems, '55 to '62?? Is the opening a rectangle or somewhat oval? A fellow has a pair on ebay, item number 1876227747. I checked a pair on a '56 and found the numbers to show 426 and 426. I know that they have different notes. A and something else. Anyone that can give me some advise before bidding on the wrong item and installing the incorrect horns on my '56 would be greatly appricated. Thanks again. Bud

    Bud,
The 56 horns are dome shaped on top and the opening has triangle
shaped flange. I'm not sure of the numbers.

Bud I looked at E-Bay they are 61 to 62 horns ( wont work). The 55 and 56 Chevy horns look just like a vett, but the car has a wire coming out of the horn were as the corvette your harness srews to your horn and the chevy mounting bracket tho it looks just like the Corvette the two holes are wrong .But because corvette horns go for Biga Bucks the car horn sound is the same and you could use them useing one bolt to mount and conect the wire to your harness wire. Every thing being black and hard to see most people would never know but you.

      And G.M made a con-zillion 55 and 56 cars.

You answered my questions. I was told the the passanger may work but they did not know about the wireing. You have been a great help. BB

Actually the 325 and 326 horns are 57 passenger car horns. They can be converted to have the correct configuration for 58-62 horns (351 and 352).
They use all the same parts, but the rear housing which holds the coil and the trumpet section are riveted together in a different orientation. All type S horns use the same trumpet and rear housing, with the only differences being the mounting bracket and the way they are riveted together. Of course there is one important difference between the 57 chevy horns and the 58-62 horns, about $400 a pair difference for the correct number stamp.

Bud One of the best and largest clubs in the world is Classic Chevy International for locating and buying parts that will work on 55 to 57 Corvettes. So many parts can be gotten from them that are the same as corvette, mostly (mechanical) parts and interior and at a cost lower the Corvette dealers.

              Re: "56 or '56 horns?

              Bud,

The '56-early '57 Vette and '55-'56 passenger horns are the same. '57 and later pass horns are not correct for your '56. As described by another respondent, the '56 has a domed, stamped cover and a triangular horn bell (outlet), and a screw terminal, not a pigtail wire connection. P/N's are 1999759 & 760 with the last three digits stamped into a pad on the surface to which the dome cover mates. Also says "12V" below the numbers. I recently paid $50/pair for some decent ones, as little as $10 in the past. Mounting brackets are different as the mtg holes to the radiator support are spaced wider on the Vette, and they're hard to find, but I agree, the pass brackets should work if you use only one hole. I think the mounting angle of the horn comes out the same, but not sure until I look at my parts.
