In the May 95 issue of Vette magazine Wayne Scraba did an in-depth article on distributor caps and rotors. He describes the differences between generic auto parts store products and other high performance type products such as Accel and MSD. I'm looking to replace the caps and rotors on both the 66 and 67 big blocks over this winter. I purchased new Delco caps and rotors from the local NAPA store....boy, do these look like crap....not the right color and very thin construction. So, now I'll try Accel.
In his article, Scraba goes to great lengths to "index" the cap and rotor. He even goes so far as to cut a window in a spare cap of the same type and mark both cap and rotor and then use a timing light to align the two. Then he talks about phasing the rotor according to vacuum. He states you can't just put the cap and rotor on and expect optimal performance. He talks about curing "ionization" by drilling a hole or holes in the cap.
My question is...do I really need to consider any of what he recommends concerning "phasing and adjustment"? If Duke or Clem or John or Joe or anyone else has and old copy of the May 95 Vette issue I would very much like to know your opinion of Scraba's article on page 48.
Thanks and regards,
Rick Snow.
