    77 seat installation

Hi, I am installing the seats in my 77 and need some clarification. The old installation, which I can't be sure was original, had the seat tracks bolted on top of the carpet with the carpet and heat insulation sandwiched between the seat tracks and floor. The AIM seems to show a "window" in the carpet with a seat track inserted. My new carpet has the windows, but I am unsure if the seat track at the front slips through the window and is bolted under the carpet (I think I can get my fingers and a box end wrench in there) or is the carpet really just sandwiched between the seats and floor? Thanks Steve

The front of the seat rails can be seen if you lift up the carpet flap. You should be able to access the front bolts thru this access. The back of the seat rails bolt to the bare floorpan. You must cut out two squares in the carpet and insulation where the bolts go thru the seat rails and into the floorpan. This is noted in the judging manual for the 1977 year. There is also a specific way that the front rail carpet flaps should have been cut but I do not recall which way is correct. Have fun"

The flap is hinged in the front ,a three sided cut. On the rear I would check the judging manual as the one I have says March 1977 a rectangle is cut from the carpet for this bolt. If your 77 was built before then it is not to clear as to when buy says one bolt through the carpet also. As for tightening the bolts I use a 12 extension on a ratchet and move the seat forward and back.

Thanks Al for the resoponse. My carpet has the flaps - three sided cut with the "hinge" to the front. I think I have the new carpet layed in a little too much to the rear of the car, since I can't get the front of the track all the way to the bolt hole. I'll play with it a little - at least I know how it goes in. Steve

Lyle, Thanks for the input. My car was built in July 77, so it should have the rectangle cut out for the rear bolts. I need to wiggle the carpet around and get it in a better position so I can get the front of the tracks all the way to the front bolt holes. Steve
