    C1 King Pin Uprgade

Stainless Steel Brakes Corp. makes an upgrade King Pin Kit for 1953-1962 Corvettes called "Royal King Pin Kit". This kit eliminates the brass bushings and instead uses needle bearings. Has anyone installed this kit or know if it is worth while considering? Thank's Pat.

    Amazing- just yesterday...

I noticed that listing in the SSB catalog, and planned to ask this very question! I can say I have dealt with SSB at the wholesale level, and I have always found their products and service to be quite good. I am anxious to hear from someone who has used this product, as my original 122,000 mile kingpins could use a little help.

I have trouble imagining that one could tell a difference in steering effort. I'm sure the needle bearings would last longer, but how many years is it going to take to wear out as set of OE style kingpins on a weekend driver? 40?, 50?

Some of us put a lot of miles on these old frontends. Plus, they could also be used in 49-54 pass car frontends. My very first car, a 51 Chev which I bought from my Granddad in 62, is my daily driver, 40 mi/day. I would be particularly interested in knowing if just the bearings are available seperately.

The needle bearings require a different kingpin. The KP diameter is smaller than used with bushings.

I too am interested in any experienced comments.

Well, if the kingpin is a smaller diameter, then how is the pin locked in place in the upright with the lock bolt?

The pin is only smaller where the roller bearings bear, near each end of the pin.

So are you saying the kingpin has the original diameter in the center and a smaller diameter on each end?

That is correct, just go to their web site and you will see some pictures of them.
