I recently visited www.acdelco.com looking for info on the PF454 oil filter that Joe dug up as a replacement for the PF25. It is shorter and has an anti-drainback valve, which will be of benefit to the side mount installation on my Cosworth Vega. (The valve is of no real value in V8 installation with a vertical mount pad on top configuration.)

Anyway, they have an online catalog and cross reference now, which I believe it fairly new, so this might be a good resource if you are looking for Delco parts. Just be aware that many parts may be "functional replacements", but may not look original.

Duke - out of curiousity, has anyone ever evaluated if these newer series of filter limit oil flow do to the anti-drainback valve? I suspect they made sure the design allows ample flow, but was just wondering if you have a high flow pump and larger clearances or elevated top end flow. I guess with the choice, the old ones are still better for our vertical mount filters...Craig

It appears that the PF 454 was developed for the 8.1L big block gasoline engine used in the medium duty commercial trucks, and I assume that it would not create an excessive pressure drop in any other application that it can service. I don't think the anti-drainback valve would limit flow.

On the subject of "high volume" oil pumps, I'll repeat what I have said before. Though the oil pump is of the "constant volume" type, once the pressure relief valve opens up, oil flow is governed by the pressure and sum of all the restrictions in the engine. A very loosed clearanced racing engine might benefit from a high volume pump, but it will do nothing on an engine built to norminal production bearing toleraces other than consume more power because any "excess" flow generated by the pump will just be short circuited back to the sump when the pressure relief valve opens.

On a Chevy V8 installation the PF454 would be of no value because the oil can't drain back into the due to the filters vertical mounting with the inlet/outlet at the top, so I wouldn't spend the extra money on a PF 454 for a V8, but I will start using it on my Cosworth Vega because of its horizonatal mounting, which allows drainback, that I can clearly see on the dipstick if the car sits for a week or more between drives, which it usually does.

i believe some 4 wheel drive trucks need a oil filter adapter that puts the oil filter at a angle to clear the front end drive shaft.

Thx Duke, I am well aware of the high volume pump argument, I was just wondering in a case where there was elevated flow due to loose bearings, and high oil flow through the top end, if there was any restriction provided due to the valve. Probably not, but not worth the bother to use the PF1218 or PF454...thx!...Craig

Duke I did not explain myself very well. When I clicked on the site like you I got the ACDelco parts web page. The next step by me was clicking on Favorites to save the site. But what I did next was just click on my file folder I wanted it in and not Add to Favorites first. Anyway in doing this the mustangparts.com web page replaced the ACDelco parts. This would not of happened if I had clicked on Add to Favorites first and then identified my folder. No problem with your post, just thought it was something to see the mustangparts.com page pop up replacing the GM page.
