I have a 65 Carter AFB #3721SB mounted on my 62 300 HP intake with the glass bowl/paper element filter on the gas line in front of the carb. I also see in the service manual a porous filter in the upper right front corner where the fuel line enters the carb that requires frequent sevicing. Would my carb also have this porous filter in the fuel system? Thanks!

Yes, I believe that you should also have the sintered bronze filter in the inlet fitting of the carb. I think that both the original AFB for your application as well as the 65 carb have this filter. It shouldn't require frequent servicing, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I'm confused, as usual.
I've never seen a Holley-type bronze filter in an AFB. Each Corvette AFB that I've disassembled had a little brass screen filter basket behind the fuel inlet fitting.
However, I'm not sure I've seen a 1962 AFB all apart. The AFB's that I remember clearly were all '63-5 carburetors.- Top

Yes, I think you're correct. The Carter carbs used the brass strainer and not the sintered bronze type filter as used on Holley carbs and some Q-Jets.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C1/C2 65 Carter AFB Fuel Filter(s)
I can't swear to the '62 configuration, but for '63 only the WCFB used on the 250 HP base engine used the sintered bronze filter in the fuel inlet cavity, and there was no external filter.
All AFB applications and FI - 300, 340, and 360 HP used the external GF90 cannister filter.
I'd be willing to bet that '62 was the same.

Jack-----
I believe that Chuck's car is actually a 62. For 1962, 300, 340, and 360 hp engines used the "glass bowl" GF-48 filter. 1962s with the 250 hp engine used no external filter, but relied on the internal fuel inlet strainer or filter.
For 1963, although the engines were generally similar to 1962, the "glass bowl" filters were scrapped in favor of the cannister-style filters. The GF-90 was used for all 300, 340, and 360 hp applications. The WCFB-equipped 250 hp relied on the internal fuel inlet strainer or filter.
Come to think of it, the 62-63 WCFBs may have used the sintered bronze type inlet filter, but I'm not positive of this. The sintered bronze filters are available in reproduction. Also, I believe that the small paper element inlet filters will work, too. No judge will be the wiser, either. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C1/C2 65 Carter AFB Fuel Filter(s)
The 62 service manual shows the sintered bronze filter for base engine cars with 250 HP and the WCFB carb. Then it shows the glass bowl filter for the AFB carbureted engines with no reference to the in-carb bronze filter. Since my carb is a 1965, I suspect I have a combination of both because the bulge for the bronze filter is definitely there. I'm going to take off the gas line and find out. Thanks for all the information. At least I know it needs to be checked out. The engine is occasionally starved for gas after running for an extended period and just dies while idling, then will start right back up. In the past, removing and cleaning the glass bowl has eliminated this problem, but now I'm experiencing it more often after cleaning the bowl. Probably getting dirt out of a very old gas tank. Anyway, thanks again!Chuck Lyman

Re: C1/C2 65 Carter AFB Fuel Filter(s)
I was driving off road in a friend's Land Rover one time when it died. I looked at the glass bowl fuel filter and thought it had some sort of sintered bronze packing that filled the bowl. I was a little disappointed when I took it apart and realized it was all rust. I guess we went over one too many bumps and jarred a ton of rust loose.- Top

Re: C1/C2 65 Carter AFB Fuel Filter(s)
In 1962 there were three different style filter. The 250-horsepower motor used the in-carb filter where thefuel line enters the car. The 300 and 340 Horse motors were AFB's, and used the glass bowl inline style of filter. The 360 HP (FI) used the silver GF-90 cannister filter in-line.
