    GM Headlight Gear - P/N 4912262

is not in the parts system, are there any supercessions? Just wondering if GM still offers this gear for sale or is aftermarket or NOS the only route? Thx!...Craig

    Re: GM Headlight Gear - P/N 4912262

Craig, there was an article years ago in the "Restorer" about rebuilding these motor and drive assembies. One of the useful tips was that the gear only rotates thru 180 degrees of travel, but it is cut a full 360 degrees. If it hasen't been done already, you can disassemble your existing unit, turn the gear around 180 degrees and you have the effect of a new gear for free! Give it a look before you go buy any parts.

      Craig,

Another suggestion is to give Steve Hackel a call at 708-687-4183. Steve is based in illinois and he restores headlight motors among other things. He might be able to suggest some alternatives for you.

        Craig------

I'd give Bill's suggestion a try first. Otherwise, the GM #4912262 is replaced by GM #22049504 which GM lists for about 60 bucks.

Gary and Bill - thx for the suggestions! Bill - I had heard your point in a Bloomington class I took from Steve Hack at Eastern Corvettes. He gave me the current GM part number too...it is 22049504, it's about $37.95 to my door via gmpartsdirect.com, but I called my local parts buddy and I can have it tomorrow for a few dollars more and I like to give him some of my business as he gives me trade price...so I got one through him. This is for a 63 motor I am rebuilding to sell on Ebay, I figured if I had restored it first (cosmetically and mechanically) plus install a new gear it would be easier to sell than a core needing work....and I would rather not sell it with a known bad gear to someone that doesn't know how to set the gear for the travel. I will save the stripped gear just in case though. I ended up with another matched pair of motors for my 66 and this core came with the parts on my 66 coupe..... BTW, Steve Hack indicated the repro gears are cast of aluminum instead of the heavier pot metal that the GM part is constructed of, and, he had used them for a while, but had some returns and he went back to the GM gears as he has never had problems with returns from customers with new GM gears....Craig

Joe - see my post a minute after yours... I found this part number through BG instructor Steve Hack from a class I took in the advanced eve courses. I will save my spare gear, but, since I am selling this motor on Ebay after I restore it (it is an extra that came with my 66 coupe) I would rather have a good gear in the restored motor. Thx though!...Craig

              Steve Hack & Steve Hackel

              Craig,

Are Steve Hack and Steve Hackel two different people, both in the headlight restoration business?

Gary - apparently. Steve Hack, who owns Eastern Corvettes, 2110 Beech Cove Road, New Richmond, Ohio. He is a super nice guy, very honest and easy to deal with, and is a Senior Bloomington Instructor. I have taken the headlight rebuilding class, and a front end rebuilding class from him. I had him restore my matched set of motors I found at Carlisle last year, and his work is first rate, including plating the bolts correctly. He also times the motors to the same speed by carefully adjusting the end play setting stopscrews. It's not rocket science, but, he does nice work if you want to avoid the tedius small jobs yourself, and I had so many large things to do I just let him go through the motors. My impression is he is very meticulous and doesn't cut corners....Craig

Gary - Eastern Corvettes is a total Vette restoration shop...not just headlights. Steve is an NCRS/BG midyear judge too.....Craig
