So what does everyone do for black fasteners?

    Hi All,

I thought I'd start a new thread so that this thought doesn't get buried in my other one.

It seems (relatively) obvious that either a) no one replates the bolts on their cars when they restore them, or b) everyone is keeping Paragon's bolt repop business growing, or c) everyone paints them with spray bombs (OEM Paints or Eastwood or the like). There are some of you out there using the Eastwood or Caswell plating kits, but is everyone???

The 1966 Judging Guide spells out MANY fasteners as being "black phosphate." Is the Guide incorrect? Black oxide is a LOT easier to find locally and have done, but if it's REALLY black phosphate I need, then I'm surprised that no one has any thoughts.

I'd be happy if anyone could enlighten me further. I have lots of excellent condition used fasteners from our 1966 coupe, some quite unique, and I'm not just going to buy new ones, even if that may be a little cheaper.

    Thanks,

    Patrick

Re: So what does everyone do for black fasteners?

    Patrick,
I replate all original fasteners on my cars when they are in acceptable condition. I use Caswell's setup and have been using it for 5 years. I also use their blackening solution for use with the CopyCad setup. It gives the look of black oxide with the rust resistance of the zinc plating. I am lucky that the C1 cars use mostly black oxide and practically no black phosphate items.

I have tried Caswells black oxide and found gun bluing works just as well and then re-coat with Caswells oil for the oxide finish.

This is simple. Get the hardware zinc plated then dip them in black ink and blow them off till dry. The more ink the glossier less is flat. You can also do this over phosphate but not as good a protection as zinc.

Is there anything special about Caswells oil? Can another oil be substituted? Is the oil used as a protector layer from corrosion?
            Thanks,
            Ron

I also have used gun bluing it works great..I had some stuff from ASL that worked good to but Im out & I dont think he is around anymore. I used ASLs coating after plating it leaves a waxy coating that wont rust. you can soak them in any type of oil .

Don Dorfman (who was ASL several years ago) is back in business on a limited basis in Washington state, and just might know what the oil/wax was he used to supply, and might even have it - his e-mail is nw_guy4_fun@yahoo.com .
