    67 Roadster Carpet Installation

I'm looking for help installing the carpet in the storage area behind the seats. I can't figure out how the pieces that fit over the rear wheel wells fit together with the flat part that covers the luggage area. It looks like the flat piece is supposed to have a slit in it, which the ends of the side pieces fit through???? The old carpet was not stock so I have nothing for a guide. thanks in advance.

Joe, I'll try to explain what I do in the rear carpet area. Start with the sound deadener insulation pieces that go over the wheel tubs. They are slit to follow the tub contour. Glue them to the tubs. I use Liquid Nails general adhesive in the chalk tube it dries fast and holds real well. After both sides are in do the same with the center sound deadener. Sand bags work well hold down pads and carpet to follow body contours. The carpet that wraps up and over the sheet metal behind the seats is the first carpet to be fitted and glued down. The best way here is to start on the seat side floor, apply glue this side only and work flat and smooth. Now apply glue on the sheet metal back side and work the carpet flat. The top edge is clamped with c-clamps and 1x2 wood boards both sides to force the carpet to conform to the sheet metal lip. Next trial fit one side of carpet over one of the wheel tubs. The edge along the floor will be fitting under the central piece of carpet when complete. This edge will extend about 1 1/2 from the corner. It usually requires t*******. Along the far back wall the fit should be the same. Apply glue to floor not carpet. Again some t******* may be required. The front part is a squeeze getting it to follow the contour near the sheet metal behind the seats. Glue the carpet down after this fitting procedure with the same Liquid Nails. This area is the part that may require a slit to conform near the stowage well. The amount of trim will depend on the quality of the carpet. This area is where most carpets fall short on fitting as well as originals. The entire carpet will need trim work to fit correctly with the recess for the stowage lid and over the tunnel hump. One point of caution this glue makes a mess out of your carpet if ya get it on the top side so be carefull. Hope this helps you.
