The car was built May 27, 1970 #10498. Would this be classified as a late or early 70 considering the strike?

Yes.
It's really a "relative" thing.
Many changes occur in any model year. Those before a change are often called "early" and those before are "late." So it may depend on your point of reference.
There's no true dividing line for this for any model year. I suppose you could draw a line at the half way point for serial numbers, but it's not that important. It's more important "why" you want to know.

Re: ? on build date
You could say that your 70 is a early model if it has the open element air cleaner and base 350/300HP engine. The late model 70's with base engines had the dual snorkel air cleaner with the air filter more enclosed. The model year of production for 70's only included Jan-Jul.- Top

Agree with Pat....
The terms 'early' and 'late' are typically relative to the item or item(s) being discussed. Hence, to get to the meat of your thread you should focus on those things you're scratching your head over....
1970 was a unique production year for Corvette as it was only a half year of flow with MY change over done during the Christmas period and January '70 initiating vehicle build. So, a May built car is a more than half-way through the MY build out.
Absolutes on 'early' vs. 'late' are usually hard to come by, but VIN #8 (an L46 convertible) lives in a garage 3-blocks from me. It may well be the first production car built as #6 has been seen/judged and it was an October '69 pre-production vehicle.- Top

Not to get off the subject..
But car #00004 joined the '70 registry and has an October 69 build date on the trim tag also. ~Juliet
