C2: L-75 oil pan

Two questions about the correct oil pan for my '65 300 h/p small block:
1. Is a "six quart" pan really a six quart pan, or a five quart plus the filter? 2. Should a six quart pan for this application have a windage tray?

In the "vernacular" I use, a "6 quart pan" really means a 6 quart oil system. Or, 5 quarts + 1 for the filter to produce a "full" reading on the PROPER dipstick. The "capacity" of an oil pan is really a nebulous and ambiguous term. ANY Corvette oil pan will hold WAY more than 5 or 6 quarts with respect to its TOTAL VOLUMETRIC CAPACITY. A "5 quart pan" means a 5 quart oil system or 4 quarts in the pan + 1 quart for the filter to produce a "full" reading on the PROPER dipstick.

That being said, your L-75 application used a "5 quart oil pan" (i.e. 4 quarts in the pan + 1 in the filter). The original oil pan was GM #3820000 and the later replacement was GM #360866. Both pans are discontinued from GM and not currently reproduced. Also, your L-75 application did not originally use an external (i.e. one attached to special main studs) oil baffle or windage tray.

If you are thinking about using a 6 quart pan on your L75 it will not fit if you have power steering.
