    Proper Date Codes

Is it possible for date codes to be before production date?
I was looking at a 2/72 build date corvette and I noticed it had a 3/72
cooling fan. The original owner stated it had never been changed.(No
the car was not for sale ). It was a low mileage car and seemed to be
    mostly original.

    With a time machine maybe

The car was built and off of the production line before that fan was built. Now could it have been that the fan was replaced before the car got out of the factory? Say quality control caught the problem before the car left and then pulled it to the side for repair. They then went to the parts bin where some brand new 3/72 parts had been stocked, and pulled the fan on the front of the bin and installed in to the car. Then it was shipped out. Could also be that it was replaced at the dealer before the original owner took delivery of the car.

I guess you're asking if it is possible

that human beings make mistakes on an assembly line - the answer is Yes.

        Dot 'i' and cross 't'....

When you say the car has a 2/72 build, you need to tell us how you came to that conclusion.... If you read the trim tag to get the date, the date you have is when the BODY was assembled; not when the car was built!

A number of key sub-assemblies fed the final line (chassis, engine/trans, body, Etc.) and each assy was built at different times. You determine the approximate vehicle assy date by interpolating it's VIN number using Chevy end of month production numbers, and, yes, there can be reasonable timing differences.

So, take the VIN and work backwards to get an approximate vehicle build date or use a resource like the Corvette Birthday Book (it knows about strikes, official holidays, Etc.). You just might find that component that's apparently dated 1-month after the 'car was built' really isn't too late....
