64 Orig. Carpet (Dye it or leave it??)

We have a 64 semi-survivor car with the original black carpet which has faded to a tan color in spots.Has anyone had any experience with carpet dye?Should it be left as is?We've thought about replacing it but wondered about losing the survivor appeal. Thanks Don...........

Hello Don; I still have the original black carpet in the rear of my 63 convertible. The fronts have been replaced several times. I have successfully used "spray dye" on the carpet on many occasions. I just mask everything off that I don't want to get overspray on, and spray away with excellent results. Just make sure that you buy the carpet dye and not the vinyl dye. There is really no worry about color match with black. As to the question about leaving the original "patina" of the old faded carpet, that's up to you. I personally would rather see a nice fresh carpet color as opposed to the old faded original color, but that's my preference. Chuck Gongloff

Chuck, Where do you get you carpet dye? All I can find is the vinyl dye.

Mar-Hyde makes "Fabric Color", a dye for carpets, velour, etc. I buy it at Pep Boys, an east coast chain. Also, J.C. Whitney used to sell "Spray Dye Sure" through their catalog. Both of these products are for carpet and/or fabric...not for vinyl. Both come in spray can form, just like spray paint. Both work great, BUT, black is easy to "match". Chuck Gongloff
