I am installing the radiator support in my 65, small block, and I see from the assembly manual that shims are required not only in the base but in the side bolts as well. I still have the original shim welded at the base but don't have or recall any shims on the side bolts. The only intallation direction given in the assembly manual is "shim as Required". How do you know whats required?? Jerry

The rad support was installed in an off-line subassembly when the front clip was bonded together in a big locating fixture; with the rad support and the front clip assembly located in the fixture, if there was any gap between the end flanges of the rad support and the inner fenders at the bolt locations, shims were stuffed in "as required" to fill the gap before the bolts were tightened in order to avoid stressing the fiberglass inner fenders inboard, which could distort the front of the hood opening. Some cars needed shims, some didn't.- Top
