C3 Gas Tank Sending Unit Sealant

On my 1980, the A.I.M. does not call for any sealant on the gasket between the gas tank and the sending unit. I replaced the strainer "sock" in the tank. However, both the sending unit and gas tank mating surfaces have some pitting caused by rust. I have cleaned up the surfaces as good as possible but they are not smooth with some pits and bumps.

The gasket between the tank and the sending unit is neoprene. Any comments on needing a sealant, and if so, what do you suggest. Thanks in Advance.

As you know there was no sealant in that area. I would suggest that you clean it very well and use some epoxy to fill and smoothe the sealing surfaces. Then install the unit. You could just use some epoxy and assemble before it is set up, but getting it back off might be interesting. I would also suggest that you get a new gasket. Old ones do not reseal very well. Do not use silicone sealants as they are not compatable with gasoline.

Thanks, I purchased a new gasket along with a new strainer "sock". I'll be careful about the silicone. The inside of the tank looked pretty good, no debris, and the tank bladder was in excellent condition.
