    1972 suspension springs

I am looking at replacing the factory springs (both front and rear) on my 72 base motor A/C coupe. I know that original springs are no longer available from GM.

Any suggestions on where to get a good set of springs (both front and rear) that will give me something close to normal ride height and decent ride / performance? Originality is not an issue here.

If you follow this board and other web boards catering to vintage Corvettes you realize that many who buy replacement or so-called "reproduction" springs have many problems.

Contrary to popular myth, springs rarely "wear out", but they can loose strength, rate, and load capacity due to corrosion. This can either reduce ride height, or in cases of severe corrosion, lead to a broken spring.

Rear ride height sag is most often caused by compression of the rubber spring link cushions, and these should probably be replaced about every five years regardless of miles driven.

My recommendation would be to rebuild your OEM springs unless they are severely corroded. Derust the coils and leaves as much as possible, then treat them to a good rust preventative coating such as Rustoleum rusty metal primer and a top color coat of your choice. Then assemble the rear leaf spring with new liners.

Hey Ed, long time no see. I just replaced my '67 original rear spring with one from Eaton Spring. We reused the original liners since they were in good condition and are trimmed differently from the reproduction liners. One could also trim the repro liners to match the originals. The ride height appears to be correct according to knowledgeable people at our Winter Regional Meet. Eaton Spring can be located online at www.eatonspring.com. Others may have had experiences with their coil springs for the front. I have not.
      Good luck and be careful,
