I just read the JUDGING CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE column in The Corvette Restorer stating that "'The presence of ANY custom body modifications SHALL necessitate a FULL DEDUCT of the body fiberglass originality and condition points'". [emphasis is mine]
Would a (matching) right hand mirror installed (drilled fiberglass) on the right side door of a car that did not come with one not be considered a "custom body modification"?

I am NOT an expert here, nor would I dare to "judge" another mere mortal's pride and joy, but I believe that the addition of the mirror would result in a deduction inasmuch as it would take the restore the door panel to its original condition. Considering that there are 5 aspects to the "originality" component (configuration, finish, installation, completeness and DIVINE PROVIDENCE), I think that you would only take a "hit" on configuration and completeness (fiberglass and paint are incomplete due to the holes drilled into the door panel to mount the mirror). Based on the originality points achieved here, you would be entitled to 100% of the available condition points, based on the condition of your car.

So, what your saying is that since the "dealer" put the r/s mirror on, I can expect deducts for 1.having a r/s mirror and 2.modified fiberglass? I would like to think it is one or the other, but surely not both. Either way my mirror is a needed and valued safety option and it's staying. At this rate I might end up with a "Participant Certification".

Todd, I'm the proud owner of a 66 with a mirror on both sides. I have four top flights on the car and each time I get hit three or four points. The deduct is not for the mirror but for the two holes in the door skin. I have a black and white photo and notorized documentation from the original owner that states the mirror was added by the dealer for racing and safety (yeah, right) purposes. Overall I feel the deduct is fair. If I had two holes caused by rocks or bullets I'm guessing the deduct would be similar.

Gregg,
1) It doesn't matter who put the mirror on, unless it was a UAW member at the plant.
2) The answer I gave Todd above also applies to you. The installation of the right hand mirror on a car where such a mirror was not installed at the factory, is not a "fiberglass modification" as addressed in the Winter 2003 Restorer. Your right hand mirror will be judged as it always has been.
At the judging seminars, we teach to deduct that kind of installation on the basis of the holes in the fiber glass. The mirror itself is not judged.
These kind of judging lessons are better given around a Corvette than on the cold pages of the internet. They are offered at many chapter and regional events. I encourage all NCRS members to attend a time or two. It can eliminate a lot of needless anxiety. Judging is not always as negative a process as some would have you believe.
My Duntov, 5-Star Bowtie (and a couple of other awards by some other organizations that are familiar to most of us) 1970 has a right hand mirror I installed in 1973, and I never lost more than a point or two for it. That has not been changed by the recent rule addition.

A rear spoiler,roll bar,& lucas flame throwers are also saftey items.Nobody says you cant have them , just expect a deduction . Read your books the standard deductions are in there. I have seen cars get Duntovs with radial tires, when everything else is correct. N.C.R.S. is a great organization .Many of us like the challenge of taking old worn out,abused,neglected ,project cars and returning them to as close to new original condition as possible .Others enjoy driving or polishing their cars,and some of us just like to read ,talk & dream about having a 425,or 435 horse conv.What Im saying is lighten up. its your car do what you want.If you loose a couple points big deal, have fun, make a few friends,you will find the cars are just part of the reason to go to the meets. Bill, that is exactly my intentions, have fun, enjoy the people, the cars, and the whole learning experience. I am knew to this and at times I am just taken back by the little tid bits of knowledge I am finding that will cost me yet more deduct's when I thought my car was up to snuff with the big boys.
I mean, I am very impressed on how far the judging really gets into the most minute varifiable facts and figures. I have been a spec man all my life, working with the most definitive nomenclature known to man ,and I have to say if anyone can appreciate the NCRS it is I. So, how many deducts should I expect for my luggage rack? lol

Luggage rack has 6 to 8 holes and would be the same as the right hand mirror's 2 holes. One point per hole is what I have seen but it is up to the team that day and total points for the area being judged.

So it sounds like I could add that 4 foot polished aluminum and carbon tuner-car 'spoiler' raised to a height of about 2.5 feet and only get say 4 to 8 points deduction for the 4 mounting holes. Not bad. A yakima ski/bike rack wouldn't be bad either especially if it's the one that doesn't require drilling.

Bill- Where can I still get Lucas Flamethrowers?? I'm restoring mine (65) which has them in place of the high beams and I can't find new bulbs. Thanks for any help.
