Point Deduct For Repro Bias Tires??

I drive my '56 with Coker radials, but,if I would have it judged, would there be a point deduction for having either the US Royal or Firestone repro 670X15 bias tires? When a set of 4 original tires, still in the wrapper, comes up for sale, they tend to get a bit expensive!(last set of NOS originals were $1200.00)!!! Any ideas?

    Steve,
There would be a deduct for repro tires, but the hit is pretty small(2points per tire if I remember right), and would probably not be worth the cost for NOS tires. You are not going to get all the points anyway, and you start with 4500, so why sweat the little stuff! A 94% car and a 99.5% car are still both Top Flight, so choose wisely what you will spend money on versus the points that it will gain. The investment of less than $100 for a disconnect switch, fire extinguisher, and NCRS sticker will give you those 10 points back!

Yes, you can expect deduction(s) for repro bias ply tires, but the point loss is MINOR compared to the cost of either used original non-DOT 'booties' or real McCoy, NOS, tread. The subject is covered in your copy of the NCRS Judging Reference Manual (the 'white' book), Section 4, Standard Deductions and an excerpt of the Rule 3, Tires, follows:

*Deduct 10% Originality: Reproduction OEM brand and size tires which differ from original only because of Federally required Department of Transportation (DOT) markings.

*Deduct 20% Originality: Reproduction OEM brand, type and size tires with differ slightly from original in design, construction, material, tread width, tread pattern, white (or colored) wall width, style lettering or pattern.

*Deduct 30% Originality: Reproduction OEM brand, type and size tires which differ considerably from original in design, construction, material tread width, tread pattern, white (or colored) wall width, style lettering or pattern.
      --------------------------------------

Basically, it takes a skilled judge to distinguish because there WERE manufacturer specific running changes in tread pattern and side wall marking over time on a given tire brand/model. You can't assume a real McCoy, non-DOT, say, US Royal 670-15 from 1960 will be identical to that same tire produced in 1956.... Therefore, there are differences between reproduction suppliers based on what version(s) of a given tire they used for a design 'model' as well as how faithfully they executed the reproduction process.

This says the distinction between the three deduction guidelines is slender and requires knowledge from one familiar/skilled in judging your specific model year.... Typically, there isn't a big cost differential between the reproduction tires offered by various sources, so it's a good idea to either attend a judging session or two and pick the brains of the judges present regarding whose repro product scores how vs. known factory originals from your era or contact the National Team Leader for advice BEFORE you finalize your selection of a given reproduction tire.

John, is there a particular disconnect switch that is recommended and acceptable for NCRS judging? Please advise on type and vendor. Thanks. - Kevin

          Kevin,
There are two basic types of disconnects, one has a green knob and you loosen the knob to disconnect, The other has a knife-type blade which lifts to disconnect. There are those wo think each style is the best. I use the green knob type and have never had any problems with it.

            Kevin -

Doesn't matter - no specific type ("green knob" vs. "knife") is specified; whatever works best for you.
